Industrial Design Builds Passive Phone Speakers!!

The Industrial Design class just finished producing their own passive phone speakers. These work by placing your phone into them and routing the sound through channels which amplify and direct the sound without the need for electricity. Imagine an old phonograph or the horn of a tuba.

Each student designed their own set of speakers by modelling them in in Autodesk Inventor. They created three separate layers, each the thickness of the boards given to them.

In Inventor, they compiled the layers into an assembly to verify that everything matches, and to get a feel for how the finished product will look.

The next step was to export drawings to use for production. One was made for each layer of wood.

Using the drawings as templates, the students used the shop bandsaw, drill press, router table, milling machine and sanders to fabricate their designs from a piece of hardwood. They gave them a nice mineral oil finish to protect the wood and give it a nice shine. The speakers sound as good as they look, and their designers learned how to take a project from concept to finished piece.

Sussex "Bridging the Gap" Luncheon!

Once more, the Advanced Engineering students hosted a luncheon to mark the donation of laptops from the Virginia STAR grant!  This time, ten laptops were donated to the Sussex County School District.

The laptops will be used for seniors to complete necessary online college forms, like the FAFSA!

The students created a presentation and did a wonderful job representing ARGS!
